  5. NAVIGATING THE INTERNET: AN INTERACTIVE WORKSHOP

  10. This week we'll use remote machines by "tenetting" across the U.S..

  12.                      CARL SYSTEM'S UNCOVER2
  13.  
  14. The Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries developed and CARL
  15. Systems Inc. provides Internet access to a host of services
  16. and databases.  Access to many library systems, both within and
  17. without of CARL members, is possible through the CARL system.  The
  18. Full text of Online Libraries and Choice book reviews,
  19. are accessible through CARL.  Today we
  20. will concentrate on the CARL System's UnCover2 document delivery
  21. service.  The following is a description from the CARL promotional
  22. handout.  The workshop participants of Navigating the Internet: An
  23. Interactive workshop have been given a password to access and test
  24. this service.  CARL's telnet Internet address is pac.carl.org, and
  25. the UnCover2 password, that will be valid for several weeks, is
  26. "navigate".  Next session will demonstrate a CARL UnCover2 search
  27. session.

  30.      CARL Systems' UnCover database provides article level access
  31. to the journal collections of selected CARL System libraries.
  32. Begun in late 1988, UnCover is an example of CARL Systems' support
  33. for unique and powerful non-traditional services.  In its first
  34. phase, UnCover made available article records taken from (and
  35. corresponding to) the tables of contents of all journals received
  36. by seven members of the Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries.
  37. By fall of 1991, the database encompassed 10,600 unique
  38. multidisciplinary journals.  It can be augmented by other
  39. institutions to reflect their special collections so this is
  40. certainly not an upper limit.  Article citations, taken from the
  41. tables of contents of each issue, are entered into the database,
  42. along with descriptive information or abstracts appearing on the
  43. contents page.  The searcher can retrieve articles on any topic of
  44. interest, or "recreate" the table of contents of specific journals.
  45.  
  46. Thus UnCover provides a "user-driven" current awareness service
  47. accessible in the comfort of the users home or office, or in any
  48. CARL System library.
  49.  
  50.      The database in continually updated  when it was
  51. received or when it is expected in the library.
  52.  
  53.      There are two ways to approach UnCover.  First, the user may
  54. search the database for a particular journal title, which gives
  55. the chance to examine the issue information for the title he
  56. selects.  From the issue screen, he can select an individual issue
  57. and look at its recreated table of contents.  From here, he can
  58. take the final step, which is to look at the article level record.

  60. (This approach is good for the user who has specific titles which
  61. he follows, enabling him to browse the contents that interest him.)

  63. The other approach, a key word search on a subject of interest,
  64. retrieves all the articles on the subject that appear in any of the
  65.  
  66. journals in UnCover.

  68.      UnCover2 introduces an important new service to UnCover:
  69. document delivery.  UnCover2 makes use of optical scanning
  70. technology, disk storage, and telefacsimile delivery to supply
  71. copies of articles from UnCover within 24 hours, and often much
  72. sooner.  Copyright royalties are carefully tracked and paid to
  73. publishers.  Fees can be conveniently charged to any valid VISA or
  74. MasterCharge card, or deposit accounts can be set up for libraries,
  75. departments, or individual users.

  78. The next session will provide a sample search of UnCover2; however,
  79. only by telneting to CARL and using the system will the full value
  80. of such a service be apparent.
